Electro-Optic effect

Electro-optic (EO) effect

Are processes whereby applying an external electrical field changes the properties of the material. This change in properties of the material generates a change of properties of the electromagnetic wave in the material. The most common practice of this effect is changing the refractive index of the material by applying voltage. This change affects the optical path through the material or the birefringence of the material, effectively changing the phase or the polarization of the incident beam.
